*** April 2022 and (part of May) help needed***
Hello, we're the Crochets (pronounced Crow-Shay). We live in beautiful Montana in a semi-off grid cabin and are looking for help to make it more sustainable.

Steve, is a carpenter, a handyman, and a jack of all trades who needs help building a couple of small outbuildings (greenhouse, chicken coop.). Claire is a gardener, and baker and needs help to tend to the garden, foraging, water collection, and composting. We both will be happy to share our skills with you.

What we need help with: clearing a 1/2 acre of land, building a greenhouse, chicken coop, and a root cellar. As well as renovating areas of the basement, organizing a larger water system for our cistern, organizing and cleaning. We need helpers who have skills in woodworking, landscaping, and bushcraft. We ask for 4 to 5 hours per day of work. These tasks will be within your limits. Any larger tasks will be done by ourselves or hired professionals.

Semi-off grid? Yes, we took the plunge into this lifestyle a few months ago and love it. It is extremely secluded with no neighbors (just summer visitors) but lots of stars! We are a retired couple who is trying to get an Airbnb and hobby farm established. We have hydroelectric, Starlink internet, and water is a rain catchment system so conservation is of the utmost importance while here.

If you would like to experience this type of lifestyle and have the skills needed, we will provide you with your own living quarters which is our finished basement with a living area with TV (antenna only, no cable), bedroom, refrigerator, and your own bathroom but everything is slightly rugged. Yes, there is a toilet and shower but, again, we require sincere water conservation. It is a cozy and quaint stay with a private entrance. You will get homemade fresh made from scratch home-cooked meals (just like momma used to make)! During your free time, you can hike, fish, do art or photography, relax, sit around the campfire (weather permitting) or use our ATV on occasion. If you leave your vehicle in Fort Smith or if you drive up your own 4x4 you can also set out to see other areas of Montana. This is a dry county, but you can bring alcohol, (partying will not be tolerated.) Smoking is frowned upon as this area is susceptible to fires. We are 420 and 2A friendly. There is wildlife on the land which consists of bears, bison, mountain lions, deer, turkeys, and more. Our property edges and the entire road is on/near the Crow Reservation and Federal land and the land and wildlife are to be respected at all times. We have a dog and a cat on the premises but they will not be in your living quarters.

We look forward to sharing our lifestyle with you. Please feel free to ask any questions.

We are a retired couple who is trying to get an Airbnb and hobby farm established. We have hydroelectric, Starlink internet, and water is a rain catchment system so conservation is of the utmost importance while here. We live 45 minutes from a town of 300 in Fort Smith (with no restaurants, stores, or bars) and live 2 hours from the nearest large city (Hardin, Billings, or Sheridan) that has stores, restaurants, bars, and supplies. The road up our mountain is rugged, to say the least. It is a narrow, rocky, bumpy, dirt, two-track road that requires a 4x4 or you won't get up here, although, we can provide transportation to and from Fort Smith while you leave your vehicle in Fort Smith.

Why come to our homestead? If you have never experienced living in an extremely secluded semi off-grid location and you have been curious about what it is like or you would like to learn about starting a self-sustainable life or starting a hobby farm or you just want to experience Montana, we would be happy to show you our lifestyle with you. We will provide you with your own living quarters which is our finished basement with a living area with TV (antenna only, no cable), bedroom, refrigerator, and your own bathroom but everything is slightly rugged. Billings Logan International Airport (IATA: BIL, ICAO: KBIL, FAA LID: BIL) is two miles northwest of downtown Billings, in Yellowstone County, Montana

The closest Airport is in Billings Montana which is about 1.5 hours from our homestead. A guest will need to be picked up and driven into the homestead.

If the volunteer has a 4x4 vehicle they could drive themselves up. The road to the homestead is a 7 mile 2 track dirt road that requires a bit of skill and a good set of nerves to navigate. Trips up and down the mountain are not possible on a regular basis and a trip into town needs to be planned.

This is a very secluded homestead that sits over the Bighorn Reservoir. Our cabin has one of the single most beautiful views in the world. It hosts world-class fishing on the Bighorn River.

We also sit in the middle of the Crow Nation reservation and great care and respect are necessary when traveling, hiking or exploring the open 20 thousand acres surrounding our cabin. The area also hosts to numerous wildlife, some predatory.

The black bear is probably to most common in the area and it is always recommended to take great care on walks or hikes. Bear spray will be provided if you need it, but you are also welcome to bring a firearm for protection.

The Fort Smith area is also a dry county and if you want alcohol you will have to plan ahead and purchase it before coming up. We also have an ATV that can be used to explore larger areas of the land. Cattle are grazed on the land as well as large herds of Buffalo and Horses.
